The Yummy Mummy Manifesto or Complete Book of Abs for Women

The Yummy Mummy Manifesto

Author: Anna Johnson

A Yummy Mummy strides through maternity with style, passion, savvy, a healthy sense of self, and killer cleavage. She soars above the domestic rut, craves creative revelation, and turns motherhood into an adventure–an art rather than a skill.

The Yummy Mummy Manifesto, Anna Johnson’s unique mix of advice, do-it-yourself ideas, riffs, and personal reflections about motherhood, shows how to make the most important job you’ll ever have more delicious in every detail. Blooming with comforting and entertaining guidance on everything from style and decor to nutrition and finding your own parenting approach, this book provides something for every new mother or hot mama-to-be, covering breast-feeding basics, dressing the in-between body, emotional roadblocks, quirky mile stones, and throwing a simple but chic first birthday party. Johnson liberates the pregnant belly from the laws of good taste–yes, you can rock horizontal stripes, big polka dots, and crazy, large floral prints–and shares ways to decorate the nursery without resorting to duckling yellow wallpaper and gingham dust ruffles. Most important, through it all, she reveals how to hold onto your spirit, creativity, wit, and sensuality.

Hilarious, enlightening, practical, candid–and joyously illustrated–The Yummy Mummy Manifesto does maternity with flair, heart, and utter bliss.

Julianne J. Smith - Library Journal

Johnson (Three Black Skirts: All You Need To Survive) has written a delightful book for the fashion-oriented, health-conscious, "deliciously disruptive" mother, addressing pregnancy (which she describes as a woman's "first opportunity to feel the power of occupying the body from the inside out"), sexuality, breast-feeding, and maintaining one's sanity with a newborn in the picture. At turns hilarious, thoughtful, and insightful-e.g., when writing of how many new mothers feel "pale, tired, and shaped like an eggplant"-Johnson is in touch with today's mothers, greatly appreciates the art of the feminine, and clearly adores the relationship between mother and baby. Her book's only weaknesses are the food recommendations, which assume that everyone has access (or the motivation) to blend cacao nibs and spirulina for a morning smoothie, and the chapter on choosing names, which is far too personal an area in which to be making suggestions, especially if you're recommending Heloise for girls and Adonis for boys. Otherwise, this fabulously written and informative book has much to recommend it, and the author's artful illustrations add to the design. Enthusiastically recommended for larger collections.

Library Journal

In this sequel to The Complete Book of Abs, the best seller that sparked a fitness obsession in the early 1990s, Brungardt addresses women of all fitness levels and ages. As the title indicates, his emphasis is abdominal work, and he does an excellent job explaining how to do each exercise via written instructions, helpful tips, and photos. Readers are also made aware of each exercise's difficulty level, lower back risk, and area of focus. Many different routines are suggested, including some for pregnant women, women with access to gym equipment, and women who want to do some exercises while at their desk at work. Brungardt also includes information on related topics like eating, motivation, and wellness. Unfortunately, despite the author's best intentions, the guide suffers from awkward organization, which makes it hard to follow and use. For example, several ab exercises are described using only text early on, and readers have to turn to the back of the book to get complete illustrations. Still, the contents have value, and libraries with women's fitness collections will want to consider. [Although the publisher claims that this is the "first-ever ab workout book created exclusively for women," a search of Amazon. com finds James Villepigue's The Body Sculpting Bible for Abs: Women's Edition, published by Hatherleigh Press in January 2003.-Ed.]-Samantha J.
